How Your HVAC System Works
The air conditioning system is composed of four major components. The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant and converts it to hot gas. The condenser then cools that gas to turn it into a liquid. The fluid passes through an expansion valve, where it transforms back into a gas, but at low pressure this time. Lastly, an evaporator uses a fan to cool the gas down quickly. That produces the chilled air that flows through the ducts, out of your air vents, and into the passenger space.
Heating is a much simpler process. Hot coolant gets drawn from the engine into a heater core. A fan blows over the core fins to send warm air into your car, truck, SUV, or van's cabin.
Eventually, though, your AC system can begin to have problems. Seals may have weakened. Hoses can degrade. The compressor may go bad.

- You're unable to maintain a consistent cabin temperature
